Joseph Graydon is a composer from South Wales, currently residing in London. He began his composition studies in Wales and furthered his education at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His compositions have been performed and recorded by esteemed ensembles such as EXAUDI Vocal Ensemble, ICTUS Ensemble Brussels, Plus Minus Ensemble, UPRAOR New Music Wales, Darragh Morgan and The Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, as well as by a variety of soloists.
Graydon's musical interests lie in the intersection of detailed acoustic textures and electronic sound processing. He is particularly drawn to subtle shifts in timbre, creating fragile and unstable sonic environments, and employing silence and space as structural elements. These explorations often delve into themes of memory, decay, and perception, aiming to engage listeners through immersive musical spaces, often citing photography and visual art sources as influences.
His diverse body of work includes compositions for soloists, chamber ensembles, electroacoustic and electronic pieces, and large-scale orchestral works.
Graydon has received accolades such as the Turner-Cooke Composition Award and the Francis Chagrin Award. He is currently pursuing doctoral research at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he continues to expand his compositional practice and contribute to new music. Joseph’s thesis explores experiential ambiguity within the compositional process, where he is supervised by Dr Paul Newland and Dr Sylvia Lim.
